Retreading - as natural as paper recycling
Waste paper has been collected and recycled in Germany - and other countries - for decades. The paper industry uses it to create new products. This conserves resources and avoids waste.
What works that well for paper also applies to tyres. But why is the rate of retreaded tyres lagging so far behind?
Current figures from 2022 show the high discrepancy:
- 74% return rate for waste paper
- 1% market share of retreaded car tyres
Tyre retreading gives tyres a second life. Car tyres are retreaded once, truck tyres are retreaded up to 3 times and aircraft tyres up to 12 times.
And keeping tyres in the material cycle and saving resources are not the only arguments in favour of retreading. King-Meiler for passenger cars, SUVs and light trucks as well as racing tyres also impress in terms of safety:
- Completion of the same tests according to the same standards as for new tyres
- Approval by the KBA (Federal Motor Transport Authority) just like new tyres
- Manufactured using certified production in accordance with DIN ISO 9001:2015
- Individual results in the ADAC summer tyre test 2023 better than some new tyres from well-known brands in some categories
The market share of retreads must grow and tyre retreading must become a common practice.
