A change in the law will come into force on 2024, October 1st. This means that only tyres bearing the Alpine symbol with a mountain and snowflake will be considered winter tyres. Previously, the "M+S" symbol also met the legal requirements. M+S tyres will remain valid as officially suitable for winter use up to and including 30 September 2024, after which they will no longer be permitted for wintry conditions.
In Germany, there exists is a so-called situational winter tyre requirement. This means that it is not based on an exact time classification. Rather, in winter conditions, motor vehicles may only drive on public roads with winter tyres.
